Pistachios recall and salmonella symptoms

Now there’s a pistachio recall. So far it’s a voluntary recall of pistachios and it was done by Kroger as there may have been possible contamination. So far it only involves their “Private Selection Shelled Pistachios”.

While it was the pistachios recall was voluntary, I commend them for that, why aren’t these things being caught before they ever get sent out for public consumption. Why are all of these foods making it into the food chain and being sold to consumers.

From my understanding it doesn’t take that long to perform the testing for salmonella so I don’t understand why, weeks after the products are released to the public, we get recalls for contamination. This should be found before the pistachios or other products are shipped from the factory.

I’ve never bothered to go look up salmonella symptoms until this morning. I never expected to have to worry about the food I buy at the store as the govt is supposed to be inspecting the food supply. Why aren’t they successful. Heh, the govt backing GM’s and Chryslers warranties is as worthless as the govts inspection of our food supply. Sorry, I digress.

Pistachio symptoms are, according to the WebMD salmonella symptoms page.

Salmonella Symptoms
Salmonella symptoms begin anywhere from 12 hours to three days after eating contaminated food.

Symptoms include:

Diarrhea
Fever
Abdominal cramps
Headache
Nausea
Loss of appetite
Vomiting
Fortunately, most salmonella infections resolve on their own within five to seven days. Antibiotics are occasionally needed for severe infections.

Not so very specific and I’ve had those symptoms to many times to believe they were all salmonella. That’s the problem, unless the symptoms are fairly severe , no one goes to the doctor for salmonella or even suspects it. Of course I’m sure the number goes up after a salmonella scare or a recall happens.

Anyway, due to the pistachios recall it’s time to quit eating pistachios while the govt tries to get it sorted out.
